The concept of K MUSEUM2 is rooted in the architectural design scheme known as "parti", which forms the basic diagram of a structure. Liu has ingeniously applied this concept to horology, creating a mechanical watch that embodies the meticulousness required in building a structure. The watch features layers of different-sized curves, each representing a different unit of time, thus creating a unique spatial experience within the confines of a wristwatch.
What sets K MUSEUM2 apart from other watches is its unique design and construction. The watch is built with no glass, allowing the wearer to touch the metal ring directly. This innovative design choice not only enhances the tactile experience of the watch but also presents a unique challenge in terms of water resistance and anti-collision measures. Liu overcame these challenges by incorporating four gaskets under the dial.
The K MUSEUM2 watch is made from titanium and features a plating black cobalt case and a sapphire crystal case back. The technical specifications of the watch include a power reserve of 36 hours and complications that show time and date display. The watch is operated by pressing the golden crown to rotate the metal and adjusting the silver crown to set the time.
The design project began in 2014 and was completed in November 2015. Liu's innovative approach to watch design, which reinterprets the beauty of time and creates a marvelous space within a limited place, has been recognized with a prestigious Platinum A' Design Award in 2016. This award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
In conclusion, the K MUSEUM2 watch by Kai-Hsuan Liu is a testament to the power of cross-disciplinary design. By fusing architectural principles with the meticulous craftsmanship of horology, Liu has created a unique timepiece that redefines the way we perceive and interact with time.
